Oil and Egg Paint Recipe

Suitable for bare unpainted wood inside or out. Washable after several weeks drying. The egg emulsifies the water as well as acts as a binder - no solvent is needed.

  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) boiled linseed oil
  • 1/3 cup (90ml) water
  • 1 tablespoon natural pigment

Whisk the egg and oil in a bowl with an electric beater; gradually add the water while beating. Add a small amount of this to the pigment in another bowl, mix well until a smooth paste is formed then add the rest of the egg/oil mixture. Cleans up with warm soapy water. Use two or more thin coats for an opaque finish allowing 48 hours to dry between each coat. For a transparent finish wipe off after a few minutes.
