Louis Müller & Cie. SA
Fabrique d'Horlogerie "La Champagne" - Louis Müller & Cie. SA
Swiss Watch Manufacturer 1854 - 1961
La Champagne was a pocket watch manufacturing company founded by Louis Müller-Finkbeiner in 1854 in the municipality of Nidau, Bern canton. The name comes from the rural area where the company was located. The founder moved the company to the city of Biel, in the same canton, as early as 1858. A branch office was established in Delémont, the capital of the Jura canton, in 1873.
When the entrepreneur died in 1890, his widow Carolina (née Finkbeiner) and his son Louis Müller (1864-1943), who had trained as a watchmaker, continued the business. In January 1893, the company was registered under the name Louis Müller & Cie. (Compagnie). At the turn of the century, the company was already known for its wide range of high-quality watch movements from 5.5 to 17 lines.
The name change to Fabrique d'Horlogerie "La Champagne" - Louis Müller & Cie was registered in May 1906. For international exports, the name Champ Watch Co. was adopted in 1912. The majority of exports went to the United States, Canada, Great Britain, India, and Japan. In 1916, the company's legal form was changed to a public limited company, and the name became Louis Müller S.A. (Société Anonyme).
