Accidents in Germ Labs and the Ebola Pandemic

These two things are very disturbing: first, the 1977 swine flu was genetically identical to a 1957 sample from a government germ warfare lab in New Jersey according to an article in the NEJM. Second this article postulates the 2014 Ebola outbreak was from a government germ warfare lab accident or series of accidents in the labs the US army has in yjay area of Africa, to conduct germ warfare experiments. The genome is of a 20 year old lab virus from 2500 miles away. It should not be there.

As of this writing I am not convinced the Ebola outbreak was because of a lab accident but I will admit two things bother me about this 1) they make a good point the type of ebola is the wrong one for the area. There may be a reasonable explanation for this. 2) The whole thing sounds nuts and it's usually pretty easy to pick things like this apart as nonsense. In this case other than one minor and unimportant niggle, I can't find no flaw in logic or facts here. While unproven, the claim here is not in my opinion, impossible.

CDC bioterror labs cited for security flaws in audits

Laboratories at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been repeatedly cited in private government audits for failing to properly secure potential bioterror agents such as anthrax and plague, and not training employees who work with them, according to "restricted" government watchdog reports obtained by USA TODAY.

"These weaknesses could have compromised [CDC's] ability to safeguard select agents from accidental or intentional loss and to ensure the safety of individuals," according to a 2010 report by the Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general.

The IG probed federal lab security after a scientist at an Army lab was implicated in the anthrax attacks in 2001. The IG also noted problems with CDC lab security in reports from 2009 and 2008.

Marburg weopanoized at Porton Down in the UK

"Human-derived Lake Victoria Marburg virus strain Popp (Vero cell passage 7), from the original human outbreak, was cultured in Vero C1008 cells (ECCAC Cat. Number 85020206) "

"Briefly, a Collison nebulizer containing 10 ml MARV was used to generate aerosol particles of approximately 1–3 μm. The aerosol was conditioned in a modified Henderson apparatus (Druett 1969). Marmosets were placed in a bespoke exposure/plethysmograph tube (EMMS, Hampshire), and the head only was exposed for 10 min to a dynamic aerosol maintained at 50–55% relative humidity and 18–20 °C."

This work was supported by the Transformational Medical Technologies program contract HDTRA01-03-D-0001-0010 from the Department of Defense Chemical and Biological Defense program through the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). The authors acknowledge the skills of P Pearce and A Phelps for telemetry implant surgery and the numerous staff within the Biomedical Sciences department of Dstl who assisted in the care and checking of animals throughout the studies. Particular thanks to M Brown, D Rogers, S Sangster and V Savage for technical assistance.

Guanarito Virus Sample Vanishes From U.S. Biodefense Lab

WASHINGTON -- A high-security biodefense laboratory in Texas has lost track of a lethal hemorrhagic fever virus sample in an incident said to underscore recent government warnings about how the United States oversees the deadly disease agents it holds for study.

Experts and researchers at other institutions have generally chalked up the Guanarito virus sample's disappearance to an clerical slipup at the Galveston National Laboratory. Auditors last week failed to locate the material inside a freezer in the facility's Biosafety Level 4 section, which is designated for handling potentially fatal, aerially transmissible pathogens that have no known cure.
