Animals and Global Warming

Dafuq?

It's asserted global warming increaed malaria, the press goes nuts and gets quite rabid then it's found out warmer climates actually slow down malaria.

"Northern mastodons were likely killed off by global cooling, not warming: Paleontologist"

The fickle monarch

Monarch butterflies dropped off the radar for a while. Global warming was blamed. Then they came back. But global warming is worse than ever. How is this even possible? Obviously it's not, so either Scientific American was worng and monarchs are not affetd by warming or it's not warming. I don't care which one you pick but there's no third possibility is there?

Snowy owls are moving south

Why would snowy owls show up in more southern latitudes?

The Panda population has increased by 17%.

In 2012 the world went crazy over the idea global warming was destroying the bamboo and extinction of the panda was postulated in tens of thousands of blog posts. This week China reported that the panda population had increased by 17%.

The greatest threat to penguins is flu.

Snakes. No, really, snakes.

This is just too funny for words.

Arctic ground squirrels unlock permafrost carbon

Arctic ground squirrels dig tunnels which may release more CO2 from frozen soil than if they didn't dig. The catch is nobody knows how many there are.

whales
 Whales face deadly viruses

Whales at risk or viral pathogens

Two factors are at play here, increasing waste from an ever expanding human population; all that waste enters the worlds waters as sewage, sometimes untreated. We measure viral loads in population of people from wastewater sampling; if you can get it they can get it. Worse, industrial pollution lowers the total amount of trac biochemicals marine mammals need to manage infection. An easy example is selenium, vital as a stylist in production of the primary lipid antioxidant (GPx3) this scarce trace element is not biologically available when fossil fuel pollution is present, instead it sequesters the selenium in a form that can not be absorbed thus removing it from the biosphere; this happened in Congo when the rail was being installed there and spread HIV all up and down the country it he 1930s. Increase the viral load and decrease selenium has only one possible outcome and it's not good.
