Early Data Shows African Americans Have Contracted and Died of Coronavirus at an Alarming Rate

As the disease spread at a higher rate in the black community, it made an even deeper cut. Environmental, economic and political factors have compounded for generations, putting black people at higher risk of chronic conditions that leave lungs weak and immune systems vulnerable: asthma, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. In Milwaukee, simply being black means your life expectancy is 14 years shorter, on average, than someone white.

As of Friday morning, African Americans made up almost half of Milwaukee County’s 945 cases and 81% of its 27 deaths in a county whose population is 26% black. Milwaukee is one of the few places in the United States that is tracking the racial breakdown of people who have been infected by the novel coronavirus, offering a glimpse at the disproportionate destruction it is inflicting on black communities nationwide.

At 562 dead in 24 hours, Cuomo Says New York Has Seen 'Highest Single Increase' In Deaths From Coronavirus

New York state had it deadliest day yet stemming from the coronavirus, with more than 500 fatalities, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday.

The death toll has gone up from 2,373 to 2,935 in the last 24 hours, Cuomo told reporters during a late morning press conference. He described it as the "highest single increase in the number of deaths since we started."

Ontario projects 3,000 to 15,000 deaths due to COVID-19 pandemic

VIDEO: Ontario health officials have released the COVID-19 modelling data featuring projections of how many people could die as a result of the pandemic.

The information includes the projected cases of COVID-19 in Ontario by April 30, the projected number of deaths in Ontario by April 30, and the projected number of deaths in Ontario over the course of the pandemic.

The projections from Public Health Ontario suggest without strong public health measures to combat the pandemic, the death toll could have reached 100,000 people in the province.

With the current measures in place, which include physical distancing and self-isolation, officials say between 3,000 and 15,000 could die of COVID-19 in the province.

They warned existing steps must stay in place to halt the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Dr. Peter Donnelly, president of Public Health Ontario, says even more needs to be done to prevent the death toll from climbing beyond the more conservative projections.
