Ontario unveils new COVID-19 modelling as active infections climb for 1st time in weeks

7-day average increased for 5th straight day

Ontario's public health measures have decreased COVID-19 transmission and have slowed down the spread of variants of concern, according to new modelling released by the province's Science Table Thursday.

But that good news comes with a caveat — according to that group of scientists, variants of concern, like B117, are still continuing to spread and cases, hospitalizations and ICU admissions will likely increase soon.

The upward climb was small — in total, there were just 21 more active cases yesterday than the day before (10,071 compared to 10,050) — but it could be notable, given that until now infections marked as resolved have outpaced newly confirmed cases every day since Jan. 12.

The new cases in today's update include 339 in Toronto, 204 in Peel Region and 106 in York Region.

Thunder Bay also saw another 44 cases. The local medical officer of health in the unit told CBC News this morning that residents should prepare to go back into the grey lockdown phase of the province's COVID-19 restrictions system. Thunder Bay is currently in the red "control" tier.

Coronavirus: How Gwent & Wales hospital numbers are changing

THE number of patients with Covid-19 in Gwent hospitals has fallen to its lowest number since October in the last week.

Over the last seven days, there have been 279 coronavirus patients in hospital in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area on average.

That is a large drop from the previous week, where the figure was 423.

It is also the lowest number since October 26 when the end of week average stood at 273.

However, despite the drop in the number of patients in hospital, Gwent is responsible for more than a third of hospital admissions across Wales in the last week.
