The first thing you do when it's clear you don't have control is try to assert control. That's a sure fire way of making an already bad situation worse.
According to Iranian reports from the street, 80% of the people there (that's 48 million) are as sick of the Iranian hard-line leadership as George Bush was. But, the Iranian revolution - the sequel to the 1979 revolution - plays out now and people will die. But not as many people that died in Iraq. The difference of course is the US aided Saddam and the US took him out. And two million Iraq's died in the process. Obama is very wise to stay out of this. As usual the mean spirited and dumb-as-a-stump Republicans calling for harsher measures. But this is not their fight. And their method, which they used on Iraq, doesn't work as well and simply costs lives, wasted needlessly, and without achieving the desired goal. What is happening in Iran can happen in North Korea, Haiti, Darfur, wherever a despot rules with an iron fist. America did it in 1776, why is it so difficult to understand that as a culture matures this is a step it must go through. Only a countries people have the right to depose an unwanted leader.
