"The streets became unsafe because the cops made them so"

Evren Wilder Elliott - My feet hurt. My brain is scrambled. I am not home, but I am now safe in an apartment downtown. Running around all night treating person after person. Treating small children who were gassed by cops. Young people lost and scared and having asthma attacks. One man who was shot by a live round. So many people just terrified.

They fired on peaceful protesters, yet again. Cops antagonized and herded people into harm's way. They fired teargas canisters on our medic stations repeatedly. One was launched directly at me as I was running to go give someone care, even though I was clearly marked as a street medic with a huge yellow cross on my chest. This was right before a woman came running at us with her infant, desperate to get literally anywhere away from the gas that kept coming and coming.

This is why things get broken. Because a mother finds herself cornered by cops with teargas and her screaming baby in her arms, and the door in front of her is locked but can be shattered.

Don't let anyone who wasn't here say a single word about what people should or should not have done these past few days. The streets became unsafe because the cops made them so.

Flint-area police join protesters marching to seek justice for George Floyd

After more than two hours, the march was led to the Flint Township Police Department, where protesters were met with a line of Flint Township officers and Genesee County Sheriff’s deputies wearing riot gear and holding batons.

Protesters initially sat down to show their peace, and after conversations sparked between police and protesters, common ground was found. High-fives, hugs and fist bumps were exchanged.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson took his helmet off and put his baton on the ground as a sign of peace.

Swanson and other Flint-area police officers ultimately joined the march, which continued back past the Genesee Valley Mall onto Miller Road to the Target parking lot.

Police targeted journalists covering the George Floyd protests

On Friday night, photojournalist Linda Tirado was shot in the eye by a rubber bullet while covering an anti-police brutality protest in Minneapolis — one of more than two dozen incidents of journalists experiencing violence while covering the recent demonstrations. Tirado says she’s permanently blind in her left eye. (She is thankful she uses her right eye to take photos, so the injury is not career-ending.)
