Alternative energy - We had about the cheapest electricity in North American here in Ontario, then the government privatized it and now we pay 3X as much despite using less every year; and then there's the price of oil... my casual interest in alternative energy sources has been piqued.

I'm not big into clocks really, I prefer watches. But I came across thins Jefferson goldern hour and I'd never give it up. I bought it as junk, plugged it in and it's kept pretty decently accurate time ever since. Amazingly all parts are still available for these things (2007) although mine hasn't needed any so far.

Free university courses online. This, in my opinion, is what the net was meant to do.

Selenium's increasing importance in life sciences

Selenium was known as a toxin long before it was found to be essential to life in 1957 (any text). By 1991 it became clear it had an effect on the immune system especially in regards to viruses (Harold Foster). After the first Ebola pandemic in 2014 work in this area at Harvard explained the chemistry of how selenium inhibits viral reproduction in 2014. In 2010 another paper from the same author (Lipinski) pointed out this chemical inhibition of viruses world an all enveloped viruses - although antedoctal evidence exists it has the same effect on non-enveloped viruses, which tend to be plant pathogens).

The discover of the antiviral properties of this scarce trace element with spotty distribution and the Ebola outbreak is rather interesting. The slow uptake bythegeneral population is somewhat of a mystery; at the end of the Covid outbreak in 2024, the SELENUM report pointed out that serum selenium status and notvaccination status what the delimiter for good and poor outcomes of the disease.

I've played with old watches for most of my life and particularly like Bulovas from the 30s and 40s and Lemania prewar chronos. Oh and that Roamer 44 jewel thing.
