Natural pigments may require some preparation. You may need to grind them in a morter and pestle. This, plus overnight slaking - soaking in water - will help you avoid "hot spots" of color, or bleeding or running pieces of pigment.
If being used in a water based recipe they ned to be slaked. Add enough water to the pigment to make a smooth runny paste, then let the mixture stand overnight.
Some pigments don't dissolve well in water and and them may be slaked in alcohol or vodka.
