Not sure if anyone has tried this but it’s a great way to propagate red Ensete ventricosum "Maurelii". I had a plant that almost died last winter.

So I cut it back to the corn, then cut the corm into 4 bits, then dry the 4 bits. The cut and quartered corm is dried in vermiculite for 2-3 weeks in a window in the sun until just dry enough to stop them rotting, to heal the cut area then pot them up into compost and water in very small amounts.

From each part I’ve managed to grow 20 pups as you can see here. So, one almost dead mother plant has produced 80 babies.

There was some rot, but I cut it off.

So here’s to my red banana forest in 2022.

Diana Bray: What time of year did you do this? I’m wondering if it’s worth buying a small one now and giving it a go? Couldn’t bear to do it to any of my mature ones.

David Rumbold: Small ones won't really work. They need to be a good size.

Getting ready to do my two big ones this November again. Last time I had just short of 200 plants by late spring.

I divide in November.then by early spring there ready to start split the growing plants. I cut away the ones with roots then leave the rest to root again. I keep doing this till none left - each time you take more off more will appear

The initial divisions of base are kept on heat and humid .then the same for the young plants until they establish.
