There had been two efforts to add graphics to Unix. First the windowing efforts in the 1980s from which Windows emerged dominant. the other effort was Steve Jobs NeXT system.
X Windows rival was Sun Microsystem's NeWS system that Steve took the name from as homage: NeXT.
So far the effort to add graphics to Unix have been clumsy add-ons and it seems prudent at this point to try to integrate graphics properly into Unix. The natural fallout of this will of course change the nature of the web for better.
