CBS admits to using footage from Italy in NYC coronavirus report

CBS News has admitted that alarming footage of an overflowing ward used during a report on the coronavirus crisis in Big Apple hospitals was actually shot in Italy.

Italy's Coronavirus Death Toll Is Far Higher Than Reported

MILAN–—In the town of Coccaglio, an hour’s drive east of here, the local nursing home lost over a third of its residents in March. None of the 24 people who died there were tested for the new coronavirus. Nor were the 38 people who died in another nursing home in the nearby town of Lodi.

These aren’t isolated incidents. Italy’s official death toll from the virus stands at 13,155, the most of any country in the world. But that number tells only part of the story because many people who die from the virus don’t make it to the hospital and are never tested.

In the areas worst hit by the pandemic, Italy is undercounting thousands of deaths caused by the virus, a Wall Street Journal analysis shows, indicating that the pandemic’s human toll may end up being much greater, and infections far more widespread, than official data indicate.

Ontario announces 426 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday April 1 2020

Ontario is reporting 426 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the provincial total to 2,392.

The province says of all cases, 24 per cent had travelled in the 14 days prior to becoming ill, 11 per cent had close contact with a confirmed case, and 16 per cent had neither. The province has listed the transmission of 49 per cent of the new cases as pending.

More than half of the cases are in the province are from the Greater Toronto Area.

The median age of the patients is 50, ranging from 1 to 100.

The total number includes 37 deaths and 689 resolved cases.

There are currently 61 cases in Niagara Region, 74 in Halton Region and 101 in Hamilton.

Health officials across the province continue to urge residents to practice social distancing in order to contain the spread of the virus

Number of COVID-19 deaths confirmed by local public health units is nearly double what Ontario is reporting

TORONTO -- Data from Ontario’s 34 local public health units shows that at least 68 people infected with the novel coronavirus have died, a number nearly double what provincial officials reported Wednesday morning.

In its 10:30 a.m. update, the province reported 37 deaths. But as of noon, the data gathered by CTV News Toronto shows the number of COVID-19-related deaths in the province adds up to 68.

When asked about the discrepancy at a 3 p.m. news conference held at Queen’s Park, Ontario’s Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe said she was “kind of surprised” by the difference in numbers.

Wimbledon cancelled for 1st time since WWII because of virus

Wimbledon was cancelled on Wednesday because of the coronavirus pandemic, the first time since World War II that the oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament won’t be played.

The All England Club announced after an emergency meeting that the event it refers to simply as The Championships is being scrapped for 2020.

Coronavirus now third-leading cause of death in US

The coronavirus has become the third-highest cause of death in the U.S., according to a doctor's analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.

Maria Danilychev of San Diego charted coronavirus growth throughout the country and found that COVID-19 fatalities had surpassed Alzheimer's, stroke and chronic lung disease with 748 deaths per day and rising, The Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday.

The analysis is based on reports from a single day, assuming the rate of deaths remains the same or increases from now until the virus hits the projected apex towards the end of April.

Heart disease is responsible for 1,774 U.S. deaths per day, and cancer causes 1,641 deaths each day, according to the CDC.

CDC data from 2017 showed more than 647,000 people die from heart disease each year while another 599,000 die from cancer. Accidents were the third-leading cause of death at the time, accounting for 169,000 deaths annually.

President Trump and the White House coronavirus task force predicted Tuesday that between 100,000 and 240,000 people in America would die from the pandemic before it is through, with Trump and other officials reinforcing the idea that people must maintain social distancing measures to lower the curve.

“We’re going to go through a very tough two weeks, and then hopefully ... we're going to start seeing some real light at the end of the tunnel,” Trump told reporters in the White House briefing room.

“As a nation, we face a difficult few weeks as we approach that really important day when we’re going to see things get better all of a sudden,” he added. “Our strength will be tested, and our endurance will be tried, but America will answer with love and courage and ironclad resolve."

The U.S. reached its first 1,000 deaths from the coronavirus Thursday, and the total's growth is speeding up substantially.

As of Wednesday, more than 4,100 people have died from COVID-19 in the U.S., with more than 44,000 deaths from the virus worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
