51 recovered coronavirus patients test positive again in South Korea

The patients from Daegu all tested positive in a “relatively short time” after they were given the all-clear from their initial infections, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said, according to the government-funded Yonhap News Agency.

A specialist team has been sent to conduct an epidemiological investigation in the city, which is the epicenter of the epidemic in South Korea, the agency says.

For now, the KCDC’s director-general, Jeong Eun-kyeong, believes it is likely the infection was re-activated after remaining dormant in the patients, as opposed to them being reinfected, the report said.

Israel health minister, who claims coronavirus is ‘divine punishment’ for homosexuality, tests positive for COVID-19

Yaakov Litzman, health minister for Israel, has tested positive for COVID-19 after just last month saying that the virus was “punishment” for homosexuality.

According to The Times of Israel, Litzman, 71, has been accused of violating his own ministry’s guidelines on social distancing in order to continue to attend prayer services.

As well as being Israel’s health minister, he also leads the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party and witnesses said he was seen praying at the home of another member of his sect three days after indoor services were banned.

As many as 1,500 at another hospital system in the state have reported symptoms similar to coronavirus, though those numbers are not confirmed cases.

Pennsylvania coronavirus updates: State sees huge surge in deaths, with 78 more reported Tuesday

The number of coronavirus deaths in Pennsylvania surged by 78 Tuesday, by far the biggest one-day increase since the crisis began, though a top official attributed that to a lag in reporting.

The state Department of Health has now reported 240 deaths during the outbreak, including 24 in Lehigh Valley. Lehigh and Northampton counties each reported two new deaths Tuesday.

Philadelphia also reported 30 new deaths, Montgomery County, 12, Delaware County, five, and Bucks County, four.

The news comes the same day the ship was allowed to take COVID-19 patients.

"There is no impact to Comfort’s mission, and this will not affect the ability for Comfort to receive patients," according to the Navy statement. "The ship is following protocols and taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of all crewmembers and patients on board."

"The crew member had no contact with patients," the statement said.

The US has surpassed 10,000 deaths from coronavirus. That's more than the total battlefield fatalities from six combined wars.

The USA reached a grim milestone in its fight against the coronavirus Monday: More than 10,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the nation.

That total surpasses the number of battle deaths from six U.S. wars combined, according to data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

VA data says a total of 9,961 soldiers died on the battlefield during these six wars: The American Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American Warand Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The data does not include other deaths related to the wars.

U.S. officials have repeatedly likened the coronavirus outbreak to a military struggle, and members of the armed forces have joined in various efforts to help stop the virus' spread.

Boris Johnson’s Shocking Coronavirus Decline

Now more attention—not less—will be paid to how Johnson’s inexperienced administration responds to the crisis in the coming days. Since the Prime Minister contracted the virus, covid-19 has ripped through the small, close quarters at the top of the British state. The country’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, is now back at work after recovering from the virus, but neither of Johnson’s two most senior advisers, his seventy-year-old chief of staff, Edward Lister, or Dominic Cummings, are currently at their desks in Downing Street. During Johnson’s self-isolation last week, gaps appeared between various government departments responding to the outbreak, particularly around the issue of testing, which has been a shambles. On Monday, Raab, who is Johnson’s “designated survivor,” revealed that he had not spoken to the Prime Minister since Saturday. Raab’s most senior job before becoming Foreign Secretary was an unhappy four-month stint as Theresa May’s chief Brexit negotiator, in 2018. He is not a deputy Prime Minister in any conventional or constitutional sense. Speaking on BBC on Tuesday morning, Michael Gove, Johnson’s longtime ally and Minister for the Cabinet Office, stressed that any decisions made in Johnson’s absence would be made “collectively” by senior ministers and officials. Gove declined to say who was currently in charge of Britain’s national security. Shortly afterward, Gove announced that he was self-isolating, too.

New York reports highest single-day virus death toll

Scrutiny over New York's Covid-19 response has deepened after Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the state recorded its highest single-day increase in virus deaths on Tuesday.

The 731 deaths reported brought the total to 5,489 deaths and 138,836 infections.

Authorities faced questions over their actions for at-risk people after an infected inmate at Rikers jail died.

Michael Tyson, 53, died waiting for a hearing over a non-criminal offence.

As of Monday, 286 inmates and 331 staffers in New York City's jails have tested positive for the coronavirus.

He asked New Yorkers to avoid large gatherings as the Passover and Easter approach.

What is happening with New York prisons?

Mr Cuomo has so far ordered the release of at least 1,100 prisoners. Responding to questions on Tuesday, an aide to the governor said the state was "continuing to evaluate" the situation in New York's jails in relation to the virus.

Tyson, of New York's Bronx borough, was the first inmate to die of Covid-19 at Rikers Island, one of New York's largest prisons

Black Chicagoans account for half of all coronavirus cases in the city and more than 70% of deaths, despite making up 30% of the population.

Other cities with large black populations, including Detroit, Milwaukee, New Orleans and New York, have become coronavirus hotspots.

The US has recorded nearly 370,000 virus cases and almost 11,000 deaths.

Globally there have been nearly 75,000 deaths and more than 1.3m cases total.
