Remdesivir was among the first drug to be used to treat coronavirus and was recently given to US President Donald Trump when he was in hospital. However, following a clinical trial, the World Health Organization (WHO) now says that remdesivir has no substantial effects on a person's survival rate. The drug hydroxychloroquine was also ruled for having any positive effect on mortality rates.
Paul Griffin, director of infectious diseases at Mater Health Services in Brisbane, Australia, explains how the study was carried out and how the drug dexamethasone, a low-cost steroid now widely used on Covid patients in intensive care in the UK, although not included in this study, is currently the drug found to be most effective.
