Vaccinated persons can still catch and spread the virus

...I had Covid earlier this week. I’d been vaccinated three times ...

I was, admittedly, surprised when a bright red line informed me I had Covid earlier this week. I’d been vaccinated three times and avoided Covid throughout the pandemic, even while living with someone who contracted it. So I thought I was in the clear. But the virus broke through my defenses and left its definitive signature on one at-home test…

Delta variant: 81.6% of cases in Iceland are among vaccinated people.

70% of the population is vaccinated.

Iceland has reinstated social distancing measures such as masks wearing and social distancing

COVID-19 surge: Why we need more data on breakthrough infections

n May, the CDC made a decision to reduce tracking and collecting data on breakthrough infections to only those involving hospitalizations and deaths -- leaving a big gap in understanding the impact of variants as COVID-19 cases surge across the nation once again. Jessica Malaty Rivera, an infectious disease epidemiologist and research fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital, and former science communication lead at the COVID Tracking Project joins.

New outbreak of COVID-19 in B.C. care home where 82% of residents were already vaccinated - "You can have transmission even when people are fully vaccinated," said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry in a live news conference.

A new outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at the Cottonwoods Care Centre in B.C.'s Interior Health region where staff and residents had already received vaccines, the provincial health officer announced Monday

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control has confirmed on its website that 82 per cent of residents had been vaccinated as of Feb. 15. The centre does not provide information about how many staff were immunized.

In a live news conference, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said being vaccinated doesn't mean transmission will be stopped and that precautions must remain in place for seniors and care homes.

"You can have transmission even when people are fully vaccinated," she said. "The illness seems to be milder and doesn't transmit as much [and we] won't see rapid explosive outbreaks."

Beta variant in France a ‘threat’ as it evades all vaccines immune response

IT was announced on Friday evening that holidaymakers returning from France must continue to quarantine for 10 days – even if they are double jabbed.

Infection despite vaccination

"those vaccinated generally can still transmit the disease"

Once someone is vaccinated, do they still have to wear a mask and physically distance?

"Dr. Zain Chagla, an associate professor of medicine at McMaster University and an infectious disease physician in Hamilton, Ont., said yes"

COVID-19 infections after 2 vaccine doses are 0.5 per cent of reported cases

'Breakthrough infections' among fully vaccinated Canadians 0.5 per cent of reported cases, data shows

...people who are fully vaccinated will still get COVID-19 if they are exposed to the virus that causes it

It’s also possible that some fully vaccinated people might have infections

Fully vaccinated people can still transmit the virus to others, including other vaccinated people

While it is possible, Dr. Cardona says that the ability to transmit COVID-19 may occur at a lower rate. She adds that this could also be a reality for people who don’t have a good immune response to vaccines.

All of the vaccinated monkeys treated with the Oxford vaccine became infected when challenged, as judged by recovery of virus genomic RNA from nasal secretions. What then is the argument for pressing forward with the adenovirus vector SARS-CoV-2 spike protein vaccine? The authors present evidence to the effect that, although the vaccine did not protect the animals from infection, it did moderate the disease.

The day after data appeared from the vaccine maker Sinovac showed complete protection of rhesus monkeys by their vaccine candidate (whole inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus particles), scientists from the Jenner Institute in Oxford issued a press release announcing that their vaccine (an adenovirus vector based vaccine that carried the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein) worked to protect rhesus monkeys and that they were moving forward with large scale human safety trials. At the time, the substantiating data was not available. Now it is, in the form of a May 13 BioRxiv preprint. Does the data support the claim?

Not really. All of the vaccinated monkeys treated with the Oxford vaccine became infected when challenged, as judged by recovery of virus genomic RNA from nasal secretions. There was no difference in the amount of viral RNA detected from this site in the vaccinated monkeys as compared to the unvaccinated animals. Which is to say, all vaccinated animals were infected. This observation is in marked contrast to the results reported from Sinovac trial. At the highest dose studied, no virus was recovered from vaccinated monkeys from the throat, lung, or rectum of the vaccinated animals.

There is a second troubling result of the Oxford paper. The titer of neutralizing antibody, as judged by inhibition of virus replication by successive serum dilutions as reported is extremely low. Typically, neutralizing antibodies in effective vaccines can be diluted by more than a thousand fold and retain activity. In these experiments the serum could be diluted only by 4 to 40 fold before neutralizing activity was lost. Again, by contrast the titer of neutralizing antibodies in the serum of those vaccinated with whole inactivated SARS-CoV-2 was high.

What then is the argument for pressing forward with the adenovirus vector SARS-CoV-2 spike protein vaccine?

The authors present evidence to the effect that, although the vaccine did not protect the animals from infection, it did moderate the disease.

Four of five people who were hospitalized were fully vaccinated

"A sobering scientific analysis published Friday found that three-quarters of the people infected during an explosive coronavirus outbreak fueled by the delta variant were fully vaccinated. "

'A CDC internal document obtained by The Washington Post estimated that 35,000 vaccinated people a week in the United States are having symptomatic breakthrough infections, out of a vaccinated population of more than 162 million. Vaccination coverage is higher than average in Massachusetts, with nearly 70 percent of residents fully vaccinated."

The data, detailed in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, helped persuade agency scientists to reverse recommendations on mask-wearing and advise that vaccinated individuals wear masks in indoor public settings.

Critically, the study found that vaccinated individuals carried as much virus in their noses as unvaccinated individuals, showing that fully vaccinated people could infect others with the virus.

"The internal CDC document, which The Post published Thursday, states that the delta variant is as transmissible as chickenpox and is likely to cause more-severe infections than past variants."

"About three-quarters of infections occurred in people who were fully vaccinated, and that group had received Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines."

"“There’s no one person or spot to blame here,” said Daniel Park, group leader for viral computational genomics at the Broad Institute. “The thing that’s catching the attention in national public health is that … a decently high vaccination rate isn’t quite enough” to stop an outbreak with so people in one place and the delta variant spreading."

The scientists, along with officials at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, reported that 79 percent of the breakthrough infections were symptomatic. Four of five people who were hospitalized were fully vaccinated.

"The presence of similar amounts of virus in the noses of vaccinated and unvaccinated people raises the possibility they are both contributing to spread. Similar findings may be emerging from other locations. The internal CDC document showed that national surveillance found that vaccinated people had larger amounts of virus in their nose when infected with the delta variant, compared with other variants."

A report of cases from mid-July in Dane County, Wis., found a similar result, showing that fully vaccinated people had viral loads similar to those of unvaccinated people “and may be more capable of spreading COVID than was previously known.”

“Although most cases were not hospitalized, thus showing the vaccine works in an important way, this study is portentous for the achievement of herd immunity,” Andrew Noymer, an epidemiologist at the University of California at Irvine, said in an email. “If the vaccinated can become infected (and, we believe, from other studies, potentially spread covid), then herd immunity becomes more of a mirage than oasis.”

Fully immunized long-term care resident dies of COVID-19 in Kitchener

“This resident had only shown mild symptoms but, as we have seen through the course of the pandemic, the virus can change quickly and our deepest condolences are with loved ones and team members facing this loss today,” a statement read from the home’s owner Schlegel Villages on Friday.

june 2021 - A Toronto hospital network says several vaccinated people have been infected in a COVID-19 outbreak at one of its facilities.

The University Health Network says the outbreak first declared Thursday at Toronto Western Hospital's 6A unit has so far infected five patients and three staff.

It says it's urging staff to keep taking precautions to guard against the virus, even when vaccinated.

COVID-19 death reported in fully vaccinated person in Manitoba

Data from the province obtained by CTV on Tuesday shows the death occurred more than one week after the person receiving their second dose of the vaccine

May_2021 - In one week, there were nine cases of Covid-19 in fully vaccinated members of the New York Yankees organization

A Major League Baseball spokesperson confirmed to CNN Wednesday that eight of those nine cases were asymptomatic. Each of the nine were fully vaccinated -- it had been at least 14 days since their single dose of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine.

3 of 20 hospitalized COVID patients had been vaccinated, says chief medical officer of health

Russell did not say which vaccine they received or disclose any information about the individuals, other than to say two of them were immunized at least 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms and the other one, less than 14 days prior.

10,000 Americans infected despite being fully vaccinated.

Those rare cases are called breakthrough infections and as of April 30, there were more than 10,000 of these infections reported from 46 American states and territories, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The C.D.C. has stopped recording such infections if there are no severe symptoms, so the number for cases, including mild ones, is most likely higher.

"it is time for vaccinated people to consider wearing masks"

"Still, vaccinated people can come down with infections, overwhelmingly asymptomatic or mild. That may come as a surprise to many vaccinated Americans, who often assume that they are completely shielded from the virus. And breakthrough infections raise the possibility, as yet unresolved, that vaccinated people may spread the virus to others."

A vaccine might help covid 19 spread - possible to infect others even after getting a shot.

Vaccinated people might stop wearing masks and social distancing since they aren’t themselves at risk anymore. They could be carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus, even if they’re not getting sick from it.

Thousands of persons in Ontatio alone have become infected despite vaccination.

World’s Most-Vaccinated Nation Activates Curbs as Cases Rise

Seychelles, which has fully vaccinated more of its population against the coronavirus than any other country, has closed schools and canceled sporting activities for two weeks as infections surge.

The measures, which include bans on the intermingling of households and the early closure of bars, come even as the country has fully vaccinated more than 60% of its adult population with two doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The curbs are similar to those last imposed at the end of 2020.

“Despite of all the exceptional efforts we are making, the Covid-19 situation in our country is critical right now, with many daily cases reported last week,” Peggy Vidot, the nation’s health minister, said at a press conference Tuesday.

"The vaccine protects you from the disease, not the infection, but those with just the infection are asymptomatic; so you could still catch the infection and spread it.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Since Pfizer rolled out its COVID-19 vaccine this week, there has been a lot of confusion on who should be getting it and what it actually protects you from.

To put it plainly, experts say it protects you from the disease, not the infection. The only difference between the two is diseased people with the virus have symptoms varying from mild to worse, but those with just the infection are asymptomatic.

This means when you take your two shots to the arm you could still catch the infection and spread it.

Dr. Lawton Davis, director of the Coastal Health District, warned that a young, healthy person who received the vaccine could still pick up the infection if they ease up on safety guidance, like wearing a mask.

“You’re not sick and you don’t know you have it and so you could still spread it to somebody else,” he added.

Davis says those who’ve tested positive for the coronavirus in the past should still get vaccinated.

The general thought is a person who had COVID-19 has about 90 days of immunity. He says it’s best to wait that out before getting the shot leaving priority for those who’ve never had immunity.

“All of this is new, the disease is new, the vaccine is new,” said Davis, “we’ll be watching it very closely and studying to see what happens.

“I know there will be ongoing studies and follow-ups of people who received the vaccination and looking at just this question,” he added.

“Yes, you are still contagious; a vaccinated person could still get infected and can infect others."

"Yes, you are still contagious; a vaccinated person could still get infected and can infect others, even if they don’t get very sick. Those who got the vaccine were less likely to carry the virus, but the numbers were really small,"

“It’s a signal in the right direction, but nonetheless it cannot be interpreted that the vaccine prevents transmission.” “Yes, you are still contagious,” Dr. Hana El Sahly told Global News.

El Sahly was one of the lead investigators for Moderna’s late-stage COVID-19 vaccine trial. She says the novel coronavirus can live in the nasal passage for weeks, meaning a vaccinated person could still infect others, even if they don’t get sick. But there was one promising result in the study.

“We did find, in the short term, that those who got the vaccine were less likely to carry [the virus], but the numbers were really small,” El Sahly said.

Both the Moderna and the Pfizer vaccines require people to get two doses, about a month apart, to be effective.

Vaccines can only do so much

“Surprise!” This seems to be the unpleasant byword of the pandemic. Face masks aren’t necessary, we were told. Surprise, they are. The pandemic will end with vaccine herd immunity — surprise, not enough people got the shot. The infections are going way down — surprise, the delta variant is pushing them back up. The vaccines, described as up to 95 percent effective, were thought to be a ticket out of the pandemic. Now, surprise, not quite.

Certainly, hopes were sky-high that vaccines would lead to a “summer of joy and freedom,” as the White House put it, and that shots would be one-and-done, or two. But as Helen Branswell of STAT writes, “our soaring expectations for Covid-19 vaccines are in the process of sinking back to earth.” Rather than be disappointed at this latest vaccine twist, we should be realistic while demanding that people also use every other tool we have at hand against the virus.

Being vaccinated against the deadly virus does not mean you are immune or that you won’t suffer from symptoms when infected.

Professor Tim Spector OBE, leader specialist on the ZOE Covid Symptom study has shared four key signs you are suffering from the virus after receiving both jabs.

The most common symptom reported by positive cases after being double-jabbed is a headache.

A runny nose is also listed in the study along with a sore throat and sneezing.

Each week, the ZOE Covid Symptom Study releases its latest findings, and has been a go-to source of info for many during the pandemic.

The latest update read: "Generally, we saw similar symptoms of Covid-19 being reported overall in the app by people who had and hadn’t been vaccinated.

"However, fewer symptoms were reported over a shorter period of time by those who had already had a jab, suggesting that they were falling less seriously ill and getting better more quickly."

They added: "Curiously, we noticed that people who had been vaccinated and then tested positive for COVID-19 were more likely to report sneezing as a symptom compared with those without a jab."

No substantive data are available related to impact of AZD1222 on transmission or viral shedding. In the meantime, we must maintain and strengthen public health measures that work: masking, physical distancing, handwashing, respiratory and cough hygiene, avoiding crowds, and ensuring good ventilation.

So, no, it does not prevent ifection. It makes symptoms less a but more than half the time.

The AZD1222 vaccine against COVID-19 has an efficacy of 63.09% against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection.
