Kroskope beobachte, konnte ich bis zum vierten Tage die Entwicklung der Embryonen verfolgeb, sie waren also befruchtet. Am funfen Tage setste wieder die Trrubung ein, und am zehnten Tage waren samtliche Eier, auc die im bodenschlamme liegendeu, wieder verpilst, wie biem ersten Male. Hier musete also etwas nicht in Ordenung sein! Auf meine Annahme bin dass Eier such disemal bei dem Ablaichen noch nicht vollig auagereiftwaren nahm ich ene Trennung der beiden Eltern vor, indem ich das Aquarium durch eine eingeschobene matte Glasscheibe abteilte. In der ersten Zeit ging alles gut, Mannchen und Weibchen frassen tuchtig und batten sich von dem Laichgeschaft bald weider erholt; beim Weibchen konnte ich schon wieder die zunehmende Fulle des Leibes konstatieren Ende April bemerkte ich zu meinem Leidwesen, dass die Fresalust der beiden Fische erheblich nachliess; von dem morgens eingebrachten Futter war am Nachmittage noch fast alles vorhanded, selbat die glasswurm die fur gewohnlich sofort nach dem Einbringen gefressen wurden, fanden sich noch vor. Sollte gegenseitige Sehnsucht oder die Einsamkeit die Ursache der Erschlaffung sein? Ich entfernte die das Parchen trennende Glasscheibe und bald darauf schwamm das Mannchen an der Seite des Weibchens, wo es sich nun standig aufhielt und auch bald mit den Liebeaspielen begann. Akkmahlich kehrte die Freselust bei den Tierchen wieder und nach Verlauf einer Wochr befanden beide sich wieder in tadelloser Verfassung, zu der die sonnigen Tage des Mai wohl das ihrige beigetragen hatten. Unbeschreiblich schon war die Farbunf des Mannchens bei auffallended Sonnenstrahlen. Das Weibchen stroste bald wieder von Laich, und am 29, Mai 1906, in den fruhen Morgenstunden, laichen mein Fundulus zum dritten laichten Male. Wieder hoffte ich nun endlick Nachsucht von diesen reizenden Fischchen zu erhalten, meine Freunde wurde aber un jaben Scmerz verwandelt als ich nachmittags nach Hause kam und das Weibchen tot im Aquarium vorfand, das Mannchen lag auf der Seite und atmete nur noch achwach; obleich ich es sofort in frisches, gleichtemperiertes wasser uberfubrte, erholts es sich doch nicht wieder und war am Abend ebenfalls eine Leicht. Sic transit gloria mundi! Welcher Art die Ursachen des plotzlichen Absterbens meiner Fundulus wohl gewesen sein mogen, ist mir heute noch ein Ratsel.

In der Annahme, dass in dem Aquarium sich vielleicht Humusaaure oder Sumpfgas gebildet haben konnte, nahm ich eine grundliche Reinigung des Beckens vor. Die plfanzen wurden beim heraus Herausnehmen richtig abgespult, um eventuell vorhandene Eier con ihnen zu entfernen, dann wurde der nuf aus Sand bestehende Bodengrund mit des Handen duchwuhlt und hierauf das Wasser, welches einer undurchaichtigen dicken Bruhe glich, durch ein feines Gazesieb vorsichtig von dem Bande abgegossen. Zwischen dem im Siebe verbleibenden Filtrat aus feinem Schlamm fand ich etwa funfzig Eier, die samtlich durebaichtig klar waren. Nachdem ich das Aquarium neu bepflanst und mit friechem Wasser (26 C.) Wieder ein negativer Erfolg! Die Fortpflanzung bezw. Zucht dieser Fundulus im aquarium schien also doch nicht so leicht zu sein, wie ich anfangs geglaubt hatte, und wird zi ihrem Gelingen wohl noch viele Muhe aufgewandt werden mussen. Vielleicht hangt der Erfolg auch lediglieh von der Individualitat der Fische selbat ab und macht bei einem passendan Parchen - richtiger einem Mannchen und zwei Weibchen - keine Schwierigkeiten. Also abwarten,'bis ein neuer Import diese Fischen in genugender Anzahl beiderlei Geschlechts wieder bringt, um sich ein brauchbares Zuchpaar auseuchen und erneute Zuchtversuche darmit anstellen zu kinnen.

In Spiritus, im Tode vereint, wanderte das Parchen Fundulus in meine Praparatensammlung-Inzwischen hatte ich vergeblich versneht, diesen Fische zu bestimmen, die einzige Beschreibung eines westafrikanschen Fundulus, die ich der in meinem Besitz befindlichen Literatur fand, war die des Fundulus gularis Blgr. - Proceedings of the London Zoological Society 1901, P623; Tafel 37, Fig. 2 u 3 .
