Labour urges ban on riot control exports to US
The UK is being urged to halt all sales of riot control equipment to the United States amid concerns they may be being used by police to suppress protests over the death of George Floyd.
Labour said the UK had licensed exports of tear gas and riot shields in the past year and any use for internal repression would contravene the law.
The SNP has joined calls for existing and new orders to be suspended.
Boris Johnson said controls on UK exports were highly "scrupulous".

54 Percent of Americans Think Burning Down Minneapolis Police Precinct Was Justified After George Floyd's Death
A majority of Americans, 54 percent, believe that burning down a Minneapolis police precinct building following the death of George Floyd was justified, according to a new poll.
The survey, which was conducted by Monmouth University, surveyed 807 U.S. adults from May 28 to June 1. It asked respondents if they thought the actions taken by protesters, including the burning of the precinct building, was fully justified, partially justified or not at all justified.
According to the poll, 17 percent said the actions were fully justified and 37 percent said partially justified, for a total of 54 percent. In comparison, 38 percent said that the action was not at all justified. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
The poll's findings come as demonstrations have continued for days across the country in opposition to police brutality against black Americans. On May 28, protesters burned down the Minneapolis Third Precinct building, where the four officers who were involved in Floyd's arrest worked.

The claim: Asheville, NC, police destroyed a medical station during Tuesday night's protest
After protests in Asheville, North Carolina, social media posts that show law enforcement busting water bottles went viral.
The incident Tuesday was caught on video and described by a medic volunteer.
The protest marked the third day of demonstrations in Asheville in response to the death of a black man, George Floyd, in the custody of Minneapolis police officers.
What happened?
Video by the Citizen Times shows Asheville police officers in riot gear and holding shields forming a protective circle around officers stomping and stabbing water bottles. Other officers destroyed medical supplies such as bandages and saline solution.
Sean Miller, a UNC-Asheville student who is head of communication for the medical team, said the 10-12 medics present were all clearly marked as such and did not provoke police in any way.
Some of the medics had bruises and felt the effects of tear gas, but no one was seriously injured. They lost at least $700 in supplies, Miller said.
Officers didn't give them an explanation for the destruction, she said.
Glenna Grant, 33, said she witnessed the officers destroy water bottles and medical supplies. Grant said she and others set up the medical center and did not plan to protest but rather provide a safe space for anyone injured during the night.

I work in Law Enforcement. Here's what I'm seeing from the inside.
Background: I'm a member of a police department in a non-patrol/non-operational role focused on data and technology.
My city has seen multiple days of massive protests, which is unprecedented for our medium-sized city. The more hut-hut groups are leading the strategic planning of the riot control and specialized deployments.
Bottom line up front: This is a cluster fuck of racism, fear, and excitement.
In law enforcement those who fill the more physical military-Esque roles move up quickly (SWAT, K9, Street Ops). The groups I work with like technical services, intelligence, and data analysis are the redheaded stepchildren. Hell, "strategic planning" has been taken on by folks who spent their careers doing drug raids and undercover work.
The cops working these protests are expressing joy out of this. I have never been so disgusted with my field. They came into the office Monday night and were sharing war stories about how they pelted innocent protestors with rubber bullets and fired tear gas into the groups. Not once did the protestors get violent or out of control; they were just standing in the street, and the officers decided it was time for them to leave. It is almost like they are living out their paramilitary fantasy on US citizens.
Please, be careful out there when protesting, if you are unarmed and peaceful - you are almost MORE likely to be the target of police violence. The police are being bullies and are taking joy out of this - do not let yourselves be an easy target.
I am going to quit. I can not take this anymore; for the first time in my career - I genuinely feel like I'm on the wrong side of history. I've gotten some decent technical skills that can be applied to the private sector, but it's been forever since I've had to look for a new job. The Mount Vernon Police Tapes: In Secretly Recorded Phone Calls, Officers Say Innocent People Were Framed
In hours of secretly recorded telephone conversations, police officers in Mount Vernon, New York, reveal widespread corruption, brutality and other misconduct in the troubled Westchester County city just north of the Bronx.
Caught on tape by a whistleblower cop, the officers said they witnessed or took part in alarming acts of police misconduct, from framing and beating residents to collaborating with drug dealers, all as part of a culture of impunity within the department’s narcotics unit.
The Mount Vernon police tapes, obtained exclusively by Gothamist/WNYC, were recorded from 2017 to this year by Murashea Bovell, a 12-year veteran of the department who has been blowing the whistle on misconduct for years.
In 2014 and 2015, Bovell reported his colleagues’ alleged corruption and brutality in confidential complaints to the city and a lawsuit against the city, which was dismissed on procedural grounds. But he saw little change, so he began quietly recording his colleagues to substantiate his own claims.
