Here's a snapshot of top level domain prices (from a single registry, ymmv) showing the variance in registration and renewal prices compared to an arbitrary .COM name.

Around 2000 a bunch of poeple thought a domain registration meant paying a small fee then taking any name that was available from a list of tlds all treated equally. $5-$10 was the number tossed around, I liked the idea of the price equal to a local loaf of bread because" Mozambique, but whatever.

In the years since then, somehow th i* people have created out of nowhere the idea that the current system is the "consensus of the internet community" which under a mandate form the US government are compelled to do exactly this.

Show me this consensus. I can't imagine you can cine many people devoid of self interest that think this is a good idea:

The Objectives of the white paper and the Clinton/Magaziner process was to:

1. Devolve Network Solutions
2. Do something about trademarks and domains
3. Make new tlds.

This all began because of the movement on the Internet to create new tlds. The intellectual property industry cared about 1) and 2) and 2) happened very quickly - six months - despite new US laws concerning cybersquatting that had been enacted just previous to this.

(As an aside one could argue patents, copyrights and trademarks have no meaning in cyberspace, these apply only to paper, bricks and mortar and for all practical purposes are useless now. Domain names on the other hand are not useless and in effect do all the same things in the digital world that patents, trademarks and copyrights do in the paper brick and mortar world. No wonder the intellectual property lobby wanted to kill the dns and would fight any effort to expand a small and silly list of nearly incomprehensible names)

NSI was devolved shortly after and the dark ages of 10 years under Paul Twomey when absolutely nothing happened until Twomey, a foreign national in charge of the US company in charge of all names and numbers on the internet was caught lying before congress and was sent packing.

New tlds saw the light of day finally some twenty years after the first attempt - Jon Postel wiring to Rick Adams - to create them.

People involved in this issue had various goals. Knowing the cost of running a domain is less than the cost of accounting for it my interest was to keep price low in any country, being low in the US means noting if a low price there is a weeks wages in another country foe example.

One of the things that was agreed upon, at least as an idea was flat rate pricing. You pay a nominal fee to register a name and if it's not taken it's yours. COM/NET/ORG were the same price. Why did that ever change?

They were $100 at the beginning. The idea should have been to bring the cost down as the evolution of technology in both hardware and software advanced, which was consistent with the goals of the original cooperative agreement with the NSF where Netsol did registration, AT&T did directories and General Atomics created additional versions of the model these two created.

That somehow morphed into a thing we call icann that pretends to be not only "open and transparent" while also agreeing yearly for a decade on the need for "greater openness and transparency" every time it's faulted but also claims to be "the consensus of the internet community" because that's the one job it's been given by the US government. This is perhaps the issue that caused the delay in transferring control to it for ten years. - institutional confidence in ICANN has never been good outside the ICANN sphere of influence.

This is a classic case of henhouse pricing set by fox. The idea of a self regulating industry was torpedoed by exclusionary tactics and a behind the scenes effort by various three letter companies to move control of the internet's names and numbers from the technical community who created and ran it to the business class who were then set to arbitrage the entire thing, slicing and dicing it up for profit while not making it any easier to use or much cheaper.

After 18 years .com is now cheaper. That problem was finally solved. But now as well we have hundreds of news ones, blowback from the .com price stabilization attempt.
