The .Wales/.Cymru issue has been around for ages, went nowhere, then died. There is a way to fix it though and in a way that is beneficial to Wales as a whole with an improvement in service as a side effect. Remember when we invented the NHS and why? Go on then put on your thinking caps and see if you can suss this out. If not here are the details. Background
Hello Wales!
You probably don't know who I am so let me say hello and introduce myself. I was born in Cardiff in the late 1950's and whisked off to the suburbs of Newport and grew to the ripe old age of 6 in Cymbran at 35 Manbier drive. My dad worked in an iron works and was plucked away by the steel company of Canada and we landed there the day Doctor Who premiered and Kennedy was shot. Quite a day all told.

In Canada I did math in school and more math in high school where I took a year off and worked in the computer industry in my senior years then entered the University of Waterloo math program, the only way you could do computer science there. After two years I left and went to California and wrote a computer language, still in use today then after 10 years of thete of programming visions systems and tonotoss and graphics apps I returned to Canada.

My interest in the DNS arose because of an artcxts: while in California I was mentored by Brian Reid, the man who actually wrote the check for Paul Vixie to write BIND. When your best friend is the guy that understands all aspects of this the best you have a different perspective of how things really work, keep in mind the TCP network is one thing the UUCP network before that was something else and run didrnet and Brian had a lot to do with that too. In fact just last month Brian installed 1000 new root servers in China.

What's this got to do with .wales? The idea
A lot really. RFC1876 says geographical domains are for the use of the locals in that country very specifically written to keep these things out of the grubby paws of politicians.

So, I have a plan to radically alter the Internet infrastructure in Wales that will have two effects: 1a) to provide free internet service to all people in Wales. every router needs to talk to two other routers. software does the rest, I've done this twice before. 1b) to have Internet not cost anything to provision on a country wide level. While not strictly true the price is one solid Internet connection divided by the population is about 2'/6 a year per household. 2) To raise the issue to the world, who do you want to recognize? A Welsh TLD run by England nobody uses or the Welsh TLDs run by the Welsh as part of their leading edge upgrade to the architecture of contemporaneous Internet service as a cooperative?

This is pretty easy to so with simple DNS wizardry and the rest is mingling with DC Icann wonke who will be terrified. I've dealt with these people for a decade and most are my friends. Leave them to me.
