Decades-long temperature records broken across Ontario

Farnell said Toronto’s -22 C temperature Thursday morning broke a 57-year-old record and Kingston’s low of -26 C broke a 114-year-old record. He also said records were broken in Peterborough, Barrie, North Bay, Kitchener, Windsor and Niagara Falls.

Farnell said Lake Simcoe has frozen over and other lakes have seen a big increase in ice coverage since Wednesday.

Freezing Toronto temps break 57-year record

Temperatures dipped to -22 degrees without windchill being factored in. The previous record low was -18.9 set 57 years ago in 1960.

Environment Canada issued a slew of extreme cold weather alerts for the city and the rest of the GTA with the windchill making it feel closer to -30. The warning from the agency ended for Toronto and the GTA mid-day Thursday, but the city’s own cold weather alert remains in effect.

Extreme cold weather is forcing cities around Canada to alter New Year's Eve celebrations.

With some places experiencing temperatures that feel like -30 C, many are shortening or reorganizing events in order to keep people warm while they ring in 2018.

Cold to smash 119-year-old temperature record

Toronto shortens New Year's Eve party due to coldest weather in over 100 years
City says celebration at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday will now begin at 11:30 p.m.

Although a high of -8 C is expected Saturday, the brief respite from the cold won't last long. A high of -16 C is in store Sunday and a wind chill of -30 will make it feel much colder, according to Environment Canada.

Peter Kimbell, warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment Canada, predicts Sunday night's cold snap will edge into record-breaking territory bottoming out at -23 C. The previous record for this date was set in 1899, when it hit -21.1 C.

The annual polar bear club swim in the lake on New Years day was cancelled when the lake was frozen over and the outside air was closer to -40 than -30.
