(H5N6, H5N1) Vietnam culls 137,000 birds to contain avian influenza outbreaks

Thu, March 5, 2020

Vietnam has so far this year culled 137,180 birds to contain the spreading of bird flu outbreaks, the government said on Thursday.

The outbreaks, including 38 outbreaks of H5N6 and five outbreaks of H5N1, have been detected in 13 out of Vietnam's 63 provinces this year, the government said in a statement.

All of the bird flu outbreaks have happened at farms where the birds have not been vaccinated, it said, adding that, in several provinces, only 10%-20% of the birds were vaccinated.

Vietnam has a poultry flock of 460 million, and small-sized bird flu outbreaks have not been uncommon in the country during the past five years.

(H7N9) Kerala sounds alert after bird flu detected in Kozhikode district

This is the first case of bird flu in Kerala after the outbreak in 2016 in Alappuzha.

Kerala will shortly begin culling chicken and domestic animals in two villages in Kozhikkode district following the detection of bird flu, a senior official of the state animal husbandry department said Saturday.

The bird flu scare comes barely a month after Kerala reported India’s first three cases of coronavirus and successfully overcame that challenge with all three recovering even as the rest of the country has reported over 30 positive cases of infections.
