Coronavirus in Austria & Vienna | Second Lockdown to Start on November 3

After the Austrian government took increasingly drastic measures in March to contain the coronavirus, the country successfully flattened the curve in April, and gradually reopened shops, schools and restaurants again in May.

Life in Vienna got back to something like normality with summer arriving in June, while newly rising numbers in July have prompted regional lockdowns, quarantine, travel warnings and targeted measures. In August, the CoV-Ampel was introduced, and measures were gradually tightened.

In September, with cases rising again at a swift pace, stricter measures have been introduced and people were asked to limit private gatherings to 10 people at max.

Canadians must reduce contacts by 25 per cent to flatten 2nd wave curve, officials say

New national modelling shows caseload continues to accelerate even as some regions tighten restrictions

Canadians must reduce the number of close contacts they have with other people by 25 per cent in order to suppress the second wave of COVID-19, according to new federal modelling on the spread of the coronavirus released today.

At a news conference in Ottawa, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said the number of people being infected continues to increase at rates higher than they were during the first wave, even as some regions tighten restrictions.

"If we increase, or if we even maintain our current rate of contact with others, the epidemic in Canada is forecasted to continue increasing steeply," said Tam.

Covid-19: PM announces four-week England lockdown

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a second national lockdown for England to prevent a "medical and moral disaster" for the NHS.

He said Christmas may be "very different" but he hoped taking action now would mean families can gather.

Pubs, restaurants, gyms and non-essential shops will have to close for four weeks from Thursday, he said.

But unlike the restrictions in spring, schools, colleges and universities can stay open.

After 2 December, the restrictions would be eased and regions would go back to the tiered system, he said.

Mr Johnson said: "Christmas is going to be different this year, perhaps very different, but it's my sincere hope and belief that by taking tough action now we can allow families across the country to be together."

COVID-19 cases in Ontario top 1,000 for 2nd time in a week

Meanwhile, province is reporting 9 new deaths related to COVID-19

Ontario reported 1,015 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, the second-highest number recorded since the outbreak began in late January.

The new numbers also mark the second time the daily case count has topped 1,000 in less than a week.

The Ontario health ministry said the majority of new cases were found in the province's four hot spots:

Toronto: 325.
Peel Region: 282.
Ottawa: 94.
York Region: 88.
A number of other areas saw double-digit increases as well:

Hamilton: 41 — an increase of 27 from Friday.
Halton Region: 31.
Durham Region: 23.
Niagara: 23.
Waterloo Region: 22.
Simcoe Muskoka: 20.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph: 13.
Windsor-Essex: 10.
Ontario reports 9 new deaths

Meanwhile, the health ministry said Ontario's network of community, commercial and hospital labs processed 41,920 COVID-19 test samples since its last update, the highest number since last Saturday, but still below the province's daily capacity.

Saturday's new numbers bring the provincial total of COVID-19 cases to 75,730.

Public health officials also recorded nine new deaths linked to the virus over the past 24 hours.

Saturday's update brings the province's seven-day average, which offers a clearer picture of longer-term trends in new cases rather than day-to-day comparisons, to a new record high of 914.

Another grim milestone: 7,000th COVID-19 case confirmed in Ottawa

Health officials report 73 new cases in Ottawa, 1 new death in Outaouais

The nation's capital has reached another grim milestone, with Ottawa Public Health (OPH) confirming the city's 7,000th COVID-19 case since the start of the pandemic.

Of that total, 5,973 cases are considered resolved, or approximately 85 per cent.

According to public health officials, 73 newly confirmed cases were reported on Halloween, with the majority of Saturday's cases being people over 30.
