China's Hubei reports 108 more deaths, global death toll at 2,120

China’s central Hubei province had 349 new confirmed cases of coronavirus yesterday, the province’s health commission said today, down from 1,693 cases a day earlier and the lowest since Jan 25.

That brings the total number of confirmed cases in Hubei to 62,031.

The number of new confirmed cases yesterday was the final tally following deductions of 279 cases from 10 cities in Hubei, according to the health commission.

Excluding the deductions, the number of new cases on Wednesday stood at 628.

The death toll in Hubei from the outbreak reached 2,029 as of the end of yesterday, up by 108 from the previous day.

Most of the new deaths were in Hubei’s provincial capital of Wuhan, where the virus is believed to have originated.

Wuhan reported 88 new deaths, down from 116 on Tuesday. A total of 1,585 people in Wuhan have now died from the virus.

The global total now stands at 2,120 deaths from 75,291 cases. All but eight of the deaths have occurred in mainland China.

Russia temporarily bans most Chinese visitors amid coronavirus epidemi

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree on Tuesday evening prohibiting most categories of Chinese citizens from entering Russia. The new rules are effective from Thursday.

Editorial note: This story was updated on Wednesday morning to reflect clarification that not 'all' Chinese citizens are excluded from Russia. Official Chinese reaction was also added.

The decision is the strongest measure yet taken to prevent the entry and spread of the new coronavirus in Russia. Previously, Russian Railways suspended all passenger traffic to and from China, and flights have been heavily restricted. In addition, border crossings in the Far East have been closed.

“From 00:00 local time on February 20, 2020, the passage of citizens of the People’s Republic of China across the state border of the Russian Federation entering the territory of the Russian Federation for labor purposes, for private, educational and tourist purposes, is temporarily suspended,” read a statement issued by the government's operational headquarters headed by Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova.

Three people in Ontario, who had recently travelled to the affected area in China, have tested positive for the virus.

At least one of the cases has since completely recovered, with tests showing she no longer has the virus in her system.

The other two people — a husband and wife — are doing well, but have not yet been cleared by having two completely negative tests 24 hours apart, Williams said.
