Covid Hospitalizations In California Up 97% In Past 10 Days

On July 20, the 7-day average case rate among unvaccinated Californians was 20.7 per 100,000 per day.
The average case rate among vaccinated Californians on that same date was 3.5 per 100,000 per day.

By the week ending July 31, the average case rate among unvaccinated Californians had risen to 33 per 100,000.
The average case rate among vaccinated Californians was 7 per 100,000 per day.

During this interval the rate of infection increased in the unvaccinated by 64%, but the rate if increase in the vaccinated was 100%. That is the percent of unvaccinated infections increased by half but the rate of breakthrough infections in vaccinated persons actually doubled.

Thus the rate of change in vaccinated cases is increasing twice as fast as the rate of change in unvaccinated cases.

Data on Breakthrough Covid Hospitalizations and Deaths by State. CDC won't give breakthrough data.

There is still a lot we do not know about so-called breakthrough infections — when fully inoculated people contract the virus. And there is some evidence that these cases are becoming more common as the more transmissible Delta variant surges. While vaccines have done a remarkable job at protecting a vast majority of people from serious illness, the data in the Times analysis generally spanned the period from the start of the vaccination campaign until mid-June or July, before the Delta variant became predominant in the United States.

Until recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that fully vaccinated people accounted for less than 3 percent of coronavirus hospitalizations nationwide and less than 1 percent of virus deaths. But last week, the agency noted that those figures did not reflect new data involving the Delta variant and said it was actively working to update them. Only about 50 percent of people in the United States are fully vaccinated.

Looking at how many hospitalizations and deaths have involved fully vaccinated people is a common but crude measure of how well the vaccines are working.

A lack of comprehensive data, paired with growing concern over the Delta variant, may be helping to drive fears about breakthrough infections. The C.D.C. does not provide data for breakthrough instances at the state or local level, nor does it provide the data over time, which makes it difficult to see if fully vaccinated people may be becoming more vulnerable to the virus in certain areas.

In Los Angeles, Breakthrough Infections Are Now 30% Of All New Covid Cases Amid Delta Surge

In March 2021, when Americans first began hearing about the Delta variant of Covid-19, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated Angelenos accounted for just 2% of that month’s case total. By June, when Delta accounted for 50% of all variants in Los Angeles, breakthrough infections among fully-vaccinated residents had risen to 20% of all identified cases. In late July, county officials reported that the Delta variant had overwhelmed all others, accounting for more than 90% of all positive tests analyzed for variants. As a result, the ratio of breakthrough cases increased to 30%, local health officials announced today.

While L.A. County numbers for the Delta variant have not been reported for August, as of August 19 Delta had risen to 98% of all tests genomically sequenced in California. Parallel growth in breakthrough infections has not been reported yet, but it is likely significant as well, according to Los Angeles Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer today.

While continuing to profess the effectiveness of vaccines, Ferrer noted that the percentages of fully-vaccinated Angelenos being infected and hospitalized have also been rising over the past three months.

Jesse Jackson and wife, fully vaccinated, hospitalized with COVID-19

Rev. Jesse Jackson, 79, and his wife Jacqueline, 77, have been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19, according to a statement Saturday.

Jackson, a famed U.S. civil rights leader and two-time presidential candidate, is vaccinated against the virus and received his first dose in January during a publicized event as he urged others to receive the inoculation as soon as possible.

He and his wife are being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

"Doctors are currently monitoring the condition of both," according to the statement from Jesse Jackson's non-profit, the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.

"There are no further updates at this time," the statement said. "We will provide updates as they become available."

'Breakthrough infections' among fully vaccinated Canadians just 0.5 per cent of reported cases, data shows

Only 0.0027 per cent died from due to COVID-19 while partially vaccinated and 0.0018 per cent died while fully vaccinated, according to PHAC.

A recent Associated Press analysis found nearly all recent COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. — now down below 300 per day on average — are in people who weren't vaccinated.

The findings, based on government data from May onward, showed that breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated Americans accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations, or about 0.1 per cent.

As for deaths, only around 150 of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths in May were in fully vaccinated people, which equals around 0.8 per cent of the total recent death toll.
